Review: 'ROSS, NATALIE'
'TRAINS GO CHA-CHA (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Pop'

Our Rating:
Sometimes it pays not to judge a musician by their font. Receiving this EP from Natalie Ross, I presumed that I could expect some more Kate Nash-lite pop tosh, or just another bland voice over an acoustic guitar. Often I would consider not even listening, but this one came with a nice letter so I gave it a go, and was quietly impressed.

‘Me and Delilah’ sounds like Nelly Furtado with less pop production and more honesty. ‘Shipwrecked’ is a dramatic little pop song, with a spiky riff running through and sinister undertones belittling the ooh’s of a sweet chorus. Recent single ‘Secret Lemonade Drinker’ is all diva delivery mixed in with witty simile’s that say something new – and that’s always good news.

It’s not just how she sings it, it’s what she sings as well. The heart-breaking optimism of the lyrics “If he breaks my heart, at least I know where my shoes are,” is almost as sweet as a box of kittens. In contrast, the Natalie of ‘Clean Cut’ is more intimidating but no less charming.

There are always little things going on in the background that makes these songs different from the multitude of inferior music borne from the same ideas. This collection is all about the voice, with an efficient backing. There’s range on here that will make people sit up and take notice at different times, but as long as they do take notice,

Innovative for sure, and one that shouldn’t be ignored because of a font. Consider this a lesson learned for this small minded reviewer. Thanks, Natalie!
