'BRAVE BULGING BUOYANT CLAIRVOYANTS'

Our Rating:
The crazier songs are always the hardest to describe. As an introduction to Wild Beasts, ‘Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants’ has you sitting up to make sure you believe you ears in the first instance, and leaves you reaching for the repeat button the moment it has passed.

This single is a pop song disguised as a carnival. Most striking is the vocal performance, flitting between the high notes and gravelly man-parts like Kate Bush going through a particularly troublesome menopause. If you took away everything that made it a little weird and wonderful, you’re reminded of a time when Razorlight sounded entertaining and not embarrassing. Throw in what sounds suspiciously like a wood-block and a fast-tempo groove and you have a song that is as fun as it is catchy. Buoyant by name and buoyant by nature. Indeed.

Based on this song, Wild Beasts are the mischievous younger cousins of MGMT, full of spark, fun and intrigue. Releases like this undo all of the damage caused by the likes of Mika. If this is the direction high-pitched melodramatic pop is going in, then perhaps it’s about time I signed up. Presuming I haven’t done this song justice in my description, this is one you really should check out for yourself.
