Our Rating:
Animal Collective have been around for an age, but their latest album, Merriweather Post Pavilion, has seen them become critcally acclaimed and commercially successful in equal measure, with the album being tipped in some quarters as one of the albums of the decade – apparently. And so to push the album yet further, they’re releasing ‘My Girls’ as a single.

I’ll be honest, I’ve managed to close myself off to the hype: it’s a strategy I’ve employed for many years, and as a consequence I make a more concerted effort to approach music without too much prejudice.

But is this really what all the fuss is about? Oh, don’t get me wrong: it’s ok. Tribal, clappy rhythms and breezy vocals, it’s inoffensive and laid back, for sure, but by the same token it’s hardly all that innovative or attention grabbing.
Whatever my problems may be, however, it’s light and upbeat and fun, and perfect for chilling with a cold one while the sausages sizzle on the barbecue. Yes, this is the soundtrack to lazy summer afternoons. And why not?
