Review: 'SHED SEVEN'
'WHY CAN'T I BE YOU?'

-  Label: 'TASTE MEDIA'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '12/5/03'-  Catalogue No: 'TMP5004'

Our Rating:
No, don't panic - it's NOT The Cure's "Why Can't I Be You?" Somehow, I don't think even everyone's favourite perennial indie guitar outsiders SHED SEVEN are so desperate that they're paddling out into such bizarre waters for a (gasp!) 15th hit single. So rest assured, keep calm and move along, there's nothing to see here...

Except that there IS, actually, as "Why Can't I Be You?" is - totally against the odds - the sound of the Sheds coming back, re-energised and with a new label Taste Media (home of Muse, of all people) and taking this whole catchy guitar pop thing by the scruff of the neck. Again.

Sounds unlikely, I know, but this is exactly the kind of nicely cocky melodic thang that the Sheds have often quietly excelled at over the years, with extra production nous frm Supergrass man John Cornfield and bouncy, disco-y knobs on for good measure. According to singer Rick Witter, it's by some way the catchiest tune on the forthcoming album, but whatever: this is a confident, funky and surprisingly credible way to re-introduce yourself.

"I'll get over it, it's my new philosophy", Witter sneers at one point, no doubt entirely familiar with the bog-standard Britpop saddo jibes directed at his veteran combo. Good for him, though, as "Why Can't I Be You?" is really far better than we'd right to expect at this stage. Suddenly, the idea of Shed Seven having a future doesn't sound so risible after all.
