I’ll get straight to the point: this is ace!
US/Scots four-piece Paper Planes’ debut single may in many respects be the sum of the band’s influences – melding surf / rockabilly guitars to post-punk a strolling bassline – but it condenses the whole lot into 2 minutes and 51 seconds of energy. The stonking, stomping swaggering rhythm section is cocksure confident and makes more than just a small nod to The Cramps, and there’s a cheeky descending guitar lick that’s lifted almost unaltered from Johnny Kidd and the Pirates’ ‘Shakin’ All Over.’
Jennifer Paley’s drawled and reverb-heavy vocals ooze NY New-Wave / No-Wave cool and are the perfect match to the music. In short, all the ingredients are there, and combine to produce something pretty special.
Definitely ones to watch.
