Review: 'CINEMATICS, THE'
'New Mexico'

-  Label: 'The Orchard'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '14th September'

Our Rating:
It doesn't seem like more than a matter of days since I was getting excited about 'Love and Terror,' the lead single from The Cinematics' forthcoming second album by the same title. After a couple of years away after their debut, the signs are that they're simply bursting to share as much of their new material with the world as possible.

If its predecessor marked a change in direction for the band, then 'New Mexico' signals a newfound diversity in their sound. Sounding less like U2 and Simple Minds than on the last single, they've taken a turn into Editors territory, only popped-up and cheerier sounding. I have to applaud them for their willingness to push themselves, to try different sounds, for their refusal to stick to any formula.

In itself, it's not a bad track, and will probably work well in the context of the album. Unfortunately, as a single, it lacks a real killer hook and sounds just a little thin. Fan of the band as I am, I can't help but find this just a little disappointing.
