Some time last year I raved about Paper Planes' debut single, 'Doris Day,' coming straight out and declaring it 'ace.' I also suggested that on the simple strength of this one single, Paper Planes were ones to watch.
Follow-up single, 'The Sway' justifies my enthusiasm. Another spiky burst of No-Wave energy that has the perfect balance of aggression and coolness, 'The Sway' is razor-sharp and hooky as hell. Jennifer Paley's spoken narrative in the mid-section suggests she's the heir to Lydia Lunch's throne as the queen of drawling nonchalance.
Flipside (if you get the 7", or virtual flipside if not) 'Disconnected I Know' shows a more melodic side to the band. It mightn't have the teeth of the lead track, but it's got power-pop perfection written all over it, not to mention a nice New Order-esque bass break. What's not to like?
