Review: 'BUNTON, EMMA'
'FREE ME'

-  Label: 'UNIVERSAL'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '26/5/03'-  Catalogue No: '9807472'

Our Rating:
It's difficult to discuss this without sliding into overt sexism, but let's face it: EMMA BUNTON is hardly going for the demure vote with a sleeve picture featuring her legs going (frankly) all the way up to her arse. And with a chorus that makes no bones at all with its' "I long to seduce you" refrain - well, let's just say she doesn't exactly subscribe to the mystery and imagination of love here.

Actually, "Free Me" and its' attendant B-side "Who The Hell Are You" truly aren't too bad. When The Spice Girls messily imploded, few would have thought Emma Bunton would be the vaguely credible one who might still sell the odd single in later years, but amazingly she seems to have weathered the storm. Kinda.

Anyway, if all this sounds like faint praise, well it is basically. "Free Me" will probably do OK: it's got a drifting, sub- "You Only Live Twice" sorta melody which ensures it slips past smoothly enough, though the Full Intention's Freed-Up mix is a pointless attempt at trying to (sorry) spice Emma up for the dancefloor.

She's a great-looking girl is Emma Bunton, and she's not a bad example of how the average-but-sussed modern woman can make a go of this. Hell, I'm even moved to give this a 4 for effort. That's 4 more than I imagined. Does that make me a convert?
