Our Rating:
It's odd to think that Archie Bronson Outfit have actually been around for over six years. Emerging with their first album in 2004, they were signed to Domino Records at around the same time as Franz Ferdinand and the whole post-punk revival movement was exploding across Britain. And whilst along the way the ABO have displayed certain similarities with their more famous stablemates (see Derdang Derdang's "Got To Get (Your Eyes)" in particular), they seemed more content with ploughing their own swampy garage-blues furrow, far away from the limelight and attention. But "Shark's Tooth", their new single from their third album, "Coconut", which dropped on the 1st March, marks a step back towards the fold. Make no mistake, this is still an ABO track - the guitars are just as razor-sharp as before and the song bristles with that same violent, pulsing energy - but the throbbing bass, syncopated hand-claps and quasi-tribal drums sees them take a leaf out of the book being written by electro-dance-punk poppers such Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture. It's hardly surprising then that the song's production duties are handled by DFA's Tim Goldsworthy, who has also produced for... yes, LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture. Sam Windett's vocals still sound torn and forlorn, despite being funnelled through a psychedelic haze, and the whole thing comes forth in a swirling mass of dance-ready psychedelic rock. It's sure to be a hit in clubs this summer and may, just may, prove to be the single to launch ABO into the big time.
