The first time I witnessed Glissando live is an occasion that made a real impact on me. The details of the venue, when it was, what other bands were on the bill all escape me, but Glissando's performance was truly unforgettable. They played their subtle, fragile songs quietly and with complete sincerity. It was captivating. I was spellbound. Everyone in the room was spellbound. You really could hear a pin drop. I left in an almost trance-like state, knowing I had seen something special. On the subsequent occasions I've seen them, Glissando have never disappointed.
This live album, a document of their show at the Union Chapel in London in December of 2008, captures perfectly the atmosphere they're able to create, even with a small amount if interference. 'Orange' - previously unreleased as far as I know - is slow and haunting, Elly May's voice floats over a sparse piano beneath which long, low ambient notes sow the seeds of disquiet.
The remaining three of the four tracks that make up the set are from the magical 'With Our Arms Wide Open We March Towards the Burning Sea' album, and are both well selected and well performed. There's a longingness that lingers in the shadows of 'Grekken,' while 'A Kiss and a Tear' pulls on the heartstrings in the most understated of fashions.

As it is on 'With Our Arms Wide Open,' so it is here that 'Floods' is the real standout track, even in abridged form. It may sound a little muffled, but the subtle moods and intangible depths of the song are still readily discernible.
