Review: 'Violet Bones'
'I Feel the Need'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '19th April 2010'

Our Rating:
Credit where it's due, any band that can build itself a fanbase, sell out a 1,000 capacity venue and achieve any kind of success through sheer hard work and hard gigging, without label funding deserves a degree of respect. Violet Bones - who have managed to tour as support for New York Dolls and get their music played on the radio - play up their 'fierce DIY ethic'. Back in the day, sticking it to the man and going it alone was referred to as the punk ethic, but since the music industry all but imploded during the last decade, it's the way he majority of bands seem to operate now.

So whether or not a band is signed is no measure of whether or not they're any good. And are Violet Bones any good? Erm, not especially. Chirpy, good-time indie rock with a bouncy chorus is what they offer on 'I Feel the Need'. Fair enough, but there's a band that sounds just like this playing a support slot at every venue in every town every night of the week. Their college mates probably think they're great, too, and admire their DIY ethic. So it goes...
