Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins fame has been busy working with a number of interesting bands in recent years, inlcuding School of Seven Bells, John Foxx and The Big Pink, adding to an already impressive resume.
I have to admit that I never really got into the Cocteau Twins, but am not going to let that affect my judgement of his hew EP. This is perhaps as well, as it's a lovely record. Essentially, it's classic instrumental post-rock / shoegaze from the softer end of the spectrum, with chiming guitars (subtly) dominating the compositions as they drift through the air. The intro to 'Horse Heaven' is very similar to iLiKETRAiNS' 'Terra Nova', but where ILT's sound is sparse and glacial, Guthrie's is full and warm.
This isn't a challenging record, but it is soothing, and a perfect soundtrack for relaxation.
