At first, I wasn't too taken with this, a rather singer/songwriterly affair, with piano and acoustic guitar leading the instrumentation over which the listener is (initially, at least) bombarded with a list of cliche literary allusions about all the world being a stage and all the rest.
The press release suggests we should 'think the Doors blended with The Smiths...' (an odd combination, I have to admit, despite liking both The Doors and The Smiths) '...and then add a bit of Keane.' Ha! Yeah, there's definitely more Keane in the influential melting pot on 'Promise' than the other aforementioned acts. And this is Graystar's 'new sound' apparently. Inspired.
Still, after a few listens, I've discovered that it is a grower, and there's a wistful, melancholy hue that drifts over the track which is done to rather good effect, and it's by no means offensive, or offensive in its inoffensiveness either.
