Robotic vocals and grand, sweeping synths atop an undulating electro bassline and steady beat are the primary features of opener and title track 'Nibiru.' It does get a bit 'Tubular Bells' at points, but it's rather nicely executed, and segues into the atmospheric and expansive electro-disco of 'One Hundred Realities,' which melds cheesy eightiesness to more contemporary retro elecronica to good effect.
While I'm less than keen to summarise a band's work in reductive terms, it wouldn't be entirely unjust - or unhelpful, in terms of providing some kind of reference - to suggest that Chateau Marmont are the missing link between Kraftwerk and Daft Punk. The four tracks on 'Nibiru' certainly bring together elements of old-school krautrock and more contemporary dance: there's a distinctly retro vibe about some of the sounds, especially the almost proggy synth breaks, but it's countered by rhythms that are a lot more 'now.' A groove sensation, for sure.
