Review: 'LA CHERISH'
'LA CHERISH (EP)'

-  Label: 'www.myspace.com/lacherishmusic'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'July 2010'

Our Rating:
La Cherish are an electro acoustic band formed after the break up of Gregoryz Girl and comprises Leah Gregory on vocals, Chris Guard on acoustic guitar, and Stuart Walton on keyboards and programming. This is their first release, a four track E.P., which will be available as a download shortly.

The opening track, ‘Prisoner’ showcases Leah’s excellent vocals and is a charming piece of moody electronica, although the odd synthesiser bleep did get a bit irritating, it is a satisfying listen, with Leah’s soulful voice to the fore:

“I am your prisoner, there’s no escape. Don’t want my freedom back, it’s too late”.

This is followed by ‘Shadow of an Angel’, which is another great track, all programmed drumbeats and acoustic guitar, and once again, one is drawn to Leah’s powerful voice:

“Walking in the shadow of an angel, an angel with a broken wing/ Walking trough the music of an angel, when my words don’t mean a thing.”

I found that I preferred the last two tracks on the E.P., the wonderful ‘Too Much Love’ which allows Leah to show a greater vocal range, and was (slightly) reminiscent of early Yazoo. This was followed by the track ‘Danger’ which starts off with some excellent guitar work and some echo effects. This is a great love song about missed opportunities and reluctance to engage.
“I’m in danger of missing out on you, I’m in danger for what we did not do.”

Although this is not a style of music that I’m readily drawn to, I must confess that I thoroughly enjoyed this E.P., and on the strength of Leah’s great vocals, I’m sure that we will be hearing more from La Cherish soon.
