The number of riffmongering two-pieces seems to be on the increase, and the latest exponents of jerky, clattering instrumental rock with a penchant for speed and volume are Brighton's ILLNESS. This debut offering boasts six tracks and a total running time of ten minutes. By my reckoning, when it comes to making an album, it'll be very, very short indeed, or they'll need one helluva lot of material.
'Gifts from God' is an end-to-end, non-stop high-energy assault, and makes me think that this is what That Fucking tank might sound like if they spent a month listening to Pavement's 'Slanted and Enchanted' and 'Seamonsters' by The Wedding Present and then decided to go a bit more commercial and poppy. That isn't to say that the melodies aren't swept along on some chunky power chords.
I'm not a religious man, but on the strength of this EP, I'm a convert to ILLNESS.
