Not that I'm obsessed with producers by any stretch, but there are some names that keep cropping up, and in good places. Eli Janney is one of those names. As you might expect from a man who learned his skill working with prominent bands of the CD scene and who was a member of Girls Against Boys, he knows how to record a punk rock record.
Obits - whose members individually and collectively have an impressive resume that includes Drive Like Jehu, Edsel, Hot Snakes, and Pitchfork – know how to write a punk rock record. Not in the modern sense of punk, hijacked and popularised by the likes of Green Day and Blink 182, but proper, old-school garage punk. Stripped down, paired back, unpretentious, exhilarating guitar-driven punk rock: 'Moody, Standard and Poor' contains twelve slabs of the stuff. What more do you need to know? Put simply, it's great.

If these guys were 20 years younger they'd be being hyped as one of the hottest bands of the year. As it is, Obits have delivered an album that could teach these young 'uns a thing or two.
