The first thing that hits the listener isn't the chugging rhythm guitars, the power chords or the solid basslines. It's not the twiddly lead guitar parts or the forceful drumming either. Nope, it's the vocals. Not because they're remarkable in any way - in fact, they're the most generic-sounding vocals imaginable, and the guy could be any mediocre melodic rock singer from 1991 onwards, the sort you hear from bottom of the bill local support nights whereever you go - but because they're so ridiculously high in the mix. Bad move.
Then there's the prerequisite backing vocals in almost every song. You know, the ones that contrast with the lead singer's tunefulness, provided usually by the guitarist going 'waauuuurgh!' like he's having a really bad shit after a vindaloo and a heavy night on the beer. Why do they all have to do this? I mean, really, why?

The lyrics are all angst and sage reflections on bad / failed relationships, about 'reading between the lines' and 'falling' and things that will 'never be the same again' because 'the damage is done' and so on and so forth. Depth? If you're a 14 year-old fan of Linkin Park or Lost Prophets, perhaps. Perhaps they're being ironic, but I doubt is somehow.
If this all sounds incredibly familiar and you're starting to experience a strange sense of deja vu, then that's because Depth play modern rock by numbers, and there's nothing hard(core) about them, just as this album provides no sense of fulfilment whatsoever.
