Review: 'Umber'
'Morning's Pass EP'

-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '27th June 2011'

Our Rating:
Umber is another one of those one-person musical projects (one-man band simply doesn't sound right) that are all over the place right now. However, it has to be said that Alex Steward – for he is Umber – has produced something that's anything but run of the mill with 'Morning's Pass'.

In an ocean of post-rock inspired ambience, Umber stands out as having mastered the art of graceful atmosphere, and across the tracks on 'Morning's Pass' forges a work that is richly layered, deeply textured and entirely beautiful. There are no shuddering crescendos, no sudden moves: instead, Alex gently allows the sounds to unfurl and wash over the listener, while recurrent motifs and musical passages subtly tie everything together.

'Morning's Pass' is dappled shade translated into music, and gently lulls the listener with its soft, warm tones and drones, like the sun rippling on an almost-still lake.
