Taking a downbeat approach to country / folk and adding a vaguely trip-hoppy vibe – only minus the beats - ‘In a Bad Way’ is a surprising single, in that incorporates seemingly incongruous elements – sparse acoustic guitar, augmented by the sudden appearance of luscious, moody strings, for example – and yet sounds perfectly coherent and achieves an enticing degree of emotional depth.
Additional tracks – the LN2 Remix of album track ‘Idle Mind’ and the demo version of ‘Orchids’ from previous album ‘Lady Luck’ reveal a purity in Maria’s music that’s matched by both a sense of timelessness and also a willingness to explore the various avenues a superficially simple song that initially began life as nothing but acoustic guitar and vocals can be taken in... in a good way.
