The Thinking Men are appropriately named: they don’t only deal in philosophy (‘I Think, Therefore I Am,’) and poetry (‘Sonnet’), but deliver their pithy lyrics wrapped in cleverly-conceived parcels of savvy, swaggering blues rock with a new-wave leaning. Yes, the Nick Cave and Tom Waits elements are plentifully evident, but then so are hints of Bauhaus and The Fall – and even a touch of Gallon Drunk.
‘Don’t Do What I Do, Just Do What I Say’ is both raucous and raw, and packs a mean, low-slung punch, and the more downbeat closer, the aforementioned ‘Sonnet’ sees the Men leap into vintage Stones territory right at the end, and pull if off with aplomb.
Gritty, swampy and at the same time as sharp as a knife, this is one hell of an impressive debut release, and it it’s any kind of statement of intent, The Thinking Men are definitely ones to watch.
