‘Coastal Grooves’ took a little while to convince me, but while I struggled at times with the recurrent oriental motifs, it was, ultimately, the album’s sense of unity, of cohesion, of being an album rather than a bunch of songs chucked together, that made an impression. If the songs were cut from much the same cloth, there was something to be said for the subtle mood shifts and the different ways the same frameworks could be used to achieve a range of emotions.
Removed from the context of the album, ‘Champagne Coast’ sounds rather bereft, floating in and but without really making much of an impression, other than that of a man trying to emulate Prince. In short, it works perfectly as an album track, but as a single not so much.
