...and still Leeds continues to throw up exciting oddball bands who pop up, play gigs here and there, and occasionally release limited-run records. This split 7” is a classic example of the kind of DIY off-the-wallness that encapsulates the city’s scene.
Bearfoot Beware’s contribution, ‘Tending to the Slim Pickings on the Floor’ is an angular blast of stuttering percussion and guitars that leap unpredictably from clean, crisp and choppy to explosive sludge in the tap of a hi-hat. Off-kilter and quirky, it’s fundamentally built around a loud / quiet dynamic, it’s fairly all over the shop, but in a good way, and still manages to shoehorn in a hooky chorus despite clocking in at a mere two minutes and forty seven.

Moody Gowns also manage to pack a hell of a lot of action into a remarkably concise slice of psychedelic (Brit)pop. ‘Stepmother’ combines a kitchen sink domestic scenario with a buoyant, chirpy swing, and is as catchy as hell.
Top stuff.
