If ever an album came packed with surprises, it’s Opposite Sex’s eponymous debut. The first couple of tracks, ‘ La Rat’ and ‘Sea Shanty’ – both of which have been released as singles – are neatly crafted and poppy, albeit approached from very different angles, suggesting that Opposite Sex might have a few tricks up their sleeves. And they most certainly do: the explosively spasmodic math-punk of ‘Mary Lu’ heads off on entirely different tangent, and the edgy New Wave sound of ‘Dada Creep’ sounds like a lost cult classic.
There’s a real energy that crackles through the urgent ‘Vague Notion’, the vocals losing in the battle for supremacy with the piston-like percussion and doodly, tube-crunched guitar, while ‘Master/Slave’ is spectacularly schizophrenic and is dark, noisy and weird, and at the same time joyously poppy and brilliantly bouncy. How can this be?

Never mind the mechanics, ‘Opposite Sex’ is an exciting album, bursting with ideas and, in places, ragged noise that contrast and compliment the chirpy indie pop. A real gem of a record.
