Only the other week I found myself reviewing MayMay, and now it’s Jupe Jupe. Can we look to Everything Everything as the starters of this latest trend, or does it go further back to The The? Much as I like Everything Everything, few bands are really so good they have to name themselves twice, and on the strength of this sappy indie effort, Jupe Jupe certainly don’t warrant it.
But wait, what’s this? B-side ‘Piranha’ is an entirely different proposition. A stark, moody synth-led slice of post-punk disco graced with a cutty, reverb-soaked guitar, it sounds for all the world like The Danse Society circa 1983.
Ok, so it’s obvious why ‘Headlong to Ground’ is the lead track and ‘Pirhanha’ the back-up, but as the single is by no means the strongest track on their second album, ‘Reduction in Drag’ it seems like a rather odd, not to mention slightly misleading, choice.
