Review: 'Vladislav Delay'
'Espoo'

-  Label: 'Raster-Noton'
-  Genre: 'Dance' -  Release Date: '25th June 2012'-  Catalogue No: 'R-N 141'

Our Rating:
Warm synth tones, soft-focused and fuzzy are sliced stutteringly to create something latogether different from the suggestions of the component parts. An insistent four-four drum beat, under any other circumstances a firm rhythmic anchor, is stopped and started and twisted, bent and bowed every which way. Cumulatively, despite the gentle and expansive sounds, the stuttering arrhythmia penetrates the mechanisms of the brain. This isn’t dance music you can dance to, it’s electronic music that really fucks with your head.

This neat slab of wax features ‘Kolari’ on the reverse, a piece that’s more rhythmically conventional, but succeeds in building a nice dynamic tension with its insistent beats that force a fractured groove.

Intelligent and different, without being so far out as to be unpalatable, ‘Espoo’ suggests Vladislav Delay have the ability to combine concept and execution to create something fresh and not just a little bit radical.
