Our Rating:
I receive dozens of releases a week, and I’ve been doing this for a fair while. I’ve been reviewing music, off and on, for 20 years. It’s no exaggeration to say I live and breathe music. So when I say that the cover pic on Karney’s new album is one of the worst I’ve seen in a long time, you know it’s bad. I mean, seriously, why?

Then there’s the promo postcard enclosed with links to her Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube, that describes her music as ‘a captivating mix of Alt, Rock, World, and Singer/Songwriter’. Spot the odd one out, folks (and if you didn’t pick ‘singer/songwriter’, then please, get your coat).

Musically, it’s not nearly as bad as all that. Well, at least for the most part: ‘Wild Green’ has a hint of Fleetwood Mac & classic rock about it and ‘Snake Oil Salesman’ sees Karney sounding suitably menacing. However, ‘Across the Planet’ is truly dire, the vocals flat, the lyrics cringe-inducing and the trumpet incongruous in context of the MOR rock sound.

Ms K’s voice is nothing to write home about as she sings about the usual trials and tribulations of relationships and so on, but at least it’s not painful. Similarly, the musical accompaniment provided by her backing band is competent and tight and the production’s just fine, but it lacks spark, ambition, dynamism, and moreover, there’s nothing here to make Karney stand out from countless others. Maybe that’s why the atrocious sleeve, then....
