Review: 'REVEREND FREAKCHILD'
'God Shaped Hole'

-  Label: 'Treated And Released Records'
-  Genre: 'Blues' -  Release Date: 'May 2012'

Our Rating:
With an artist name and album title like this it is tempting to write off this record as a joke. However, the Rev. seems to be in earnest even though there's nothing overtly religious or freaky about his songs.

His true spiritual guidance comes from the blues and what we hear is a fairly traditional homage to this genre and a voice similar to Leon Russell's.

Reverend Freakchild originates from Hawaii but is currently based in Manhattan, New York.

He sings and plays guitar and harmonica. For most of the eleven tracks he's backed by a band he calls the Cosmic All Stars although there are also a handful of solo tunes.

Most songs are standard radio-friendly fare with the exception of Stupid Motherfucker with the MF in question being the singer himself. This is one of a pair of musical confessionals, the other being Causing Crying, where the wayward Reverend admits to being a sinner and seeks forgiveness for the cheating and lying he's done.

The artist is quoted as saying "Music is my religion. Through song I seek transcendence" but the lo-fi production, and predictable material means that everything just ends up sounding fairly flat and ordinary.
