Review: 'Alaska Campus'
'When We Were Young'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '10th September 2012'

Our Rating:
Cowbells? I mean, really. Who uses cowbells these days? Apart from lame cock rock bands who still think it’s the 80s, that is. Well, there’s Alaska Campus, for starters. They’re a wonky indie rock band from Hertfordshire, of all places, and the first track on their latest EP offering – a buoyant ditty entitled ‘You, Me and the Sun’ – is bonking cowbell crazy. Yet somehow, they manage to get away with it.

While at times the five tracks on here teeter toward the anthemic indie pop territory that’s already packed to bursting and beyond, they do show some moments of true individuality and throw in some decent tunes, played in a spirited, not to mention slightly rough and ready style.

‘Mon Reve’ is somewhat reminiscent of Pavement’s ‘Box Elder’ and it’s clear they’ve got zest and an ear for a hook that shows that it’s not all about technical excellence.
