Review: 'Earthrise'
'Eras Lost'

-  Album: 'Eras Lost'
-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal'

Our Rating:
We’re pretty much post everything now. Rock is dead; enter the post-rock age. Metal is dead; all rise for the post-metal era. Minneapolis based purveyors of post metal / sludge, Earthrise, align themselves with the likes of Jesu, Torche, Neurosis, Converge and Isis and there’s no doubt they share common elements, with an sound that’s expansive, and, dare I say it, ‘epic’.

Sludge, trumpets, gunfire and sampled dialogue herald the opening of ‘Challenger Deep’, before a powerchord, distorted to oblivion annihilates everything and hangs like a mushroom cloud for what feels like an eternity before the drums, bass and vocals kick in.

‘Eras Lost’ sure brings the sludge, but with its barrage of crushing guitars and gnarled, screaming, guttural vocals and pulverizing percussion, it’s more metal than post-metal, even if ‘Suspension’ does slow things down and introduce moody atmospherics and texture.

Cold scenes and glacial crawling tempos are commonplace, with ‘Polar Low’ grinding out deep chasms at a crawling pace. In this way, Earthrise explore lost eras not just of history and geology, but of music, looking back to the prehistoric days of heavy heavy riffing, and the resulting album is truly mammoth.
