Review: 'MANDOLAS, THE'
'MARIANNE'

-  Label: 'Self-released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: 'November 2012'

Our Rating:
Cork folk-pop quartet THE MANDOLAS have been making quite a name for themselves on the small venue circuit over the past eighteen months.

W&H first stumbled on them supporting John Blek & The Rats in the early summer of 2011 and they’ve gone from strength to strength since. Their debut EP (the five-track ‘My Greatest Day’) went on general release back in April and they’ve returned quickly with a second salvo, the already-established live favourite ‘Marianne.’

‘My Greatest Day’ showed that the band’s eclectic musical line-up (primarily two mandolins, acoustic guitar and mandola) was matched by both their diversity of influences (everything from Badfinger to Fairport Convention and Planxty) and the intuition of their live show. ‘Marianne’, again strikes a nifty balance ‘tween pop and folk: a pretty, sunny side-up love song with those plangent 4-way harmonies again bang on the money and the sort of lyrical positivity (“this could be the greatest chance we’ll ever get/ now take it with both hands”) which can’t fail to hit home in the bleak recessionary midwinter known as 2012. Pull up a chair, warm your hands and enjoy a little pre-Xmas cheer.
