Review: 'Azak, Yusuf'
'Go Native'

-  Album: 'Go Native' -  Label: 'Song, By Toad'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '12th November 2012'

Our Rating:
There’s a charming simplicity, almost naiveté, about Yusuf Azak’s second album, ‘Go Native’. In some ways reminiscent of Devandra Banhart at times, Azak’s approach to songwriting and recording is paired-back and sparse, and musically, it’s refreshingly honest.

In this honestly, Azak reveals himself to be an unusual individual, spinning delicate webs of picked guitar, occasionally augmented with piano to accompany his soft, breathy vocals which are invariably swimming in reverb. There’s a distinctly psychedelic edge to many of the songs, as well as a charming accessibility and keen sense of melody. You could hardly call ‘Go Native’ a conventional folk album, and it’s all the better for its quirkiness.
