Review: 'LAWSON, JULIET'
'Songs From The Suitcase (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Soul' -  Release Date: '28th January 2013'

Our Rating:
"Songs from the Suitcase" is the latest EP from JULIET LAWSON. It is easy listening personified, combining a medley of soulful jazz and blues. Heavily featuring violin, clarinet and cornet, the smoothness and pitch of Lawson's voice compliments the tracks to create a heart-warming sound. Listening to this EP one can imagine taking a slow bike ride on a humid summer's evening.

The cool use of violin on "The Skin You're In" works neatly with a keyboard and simple drum beat backing - this transmits the tastefully written lyrics impeccably. The tracks "Melancholy Blue" and "A Woman Passer By On The Street" are slower, with a softer sound. They give the jazz element of the EP a strong significance. Intelligence, experience and knowledge give the lyrics true meaning and are delivered with sincerity.

The narrative-style "Waste of A Woman", meanwhile, takes the listener on a journey through Eastern Europe with the breaks and change in tempo fitting appropriately.

Lawson deserves credit for creating an EP which shows her capability and love for music, sticking to a genre which she obviously suits well. "Songs from the Suitcase" will be well received by her dedicated fans and may open her up to new audiences too.
