A brooding piano, with subtle strings and occasional rolls of cymbal ebbs and slow in soft ripples form the foundations of ‘Terrane’, the second album by Australian experimental / ambient duo Gilded.
The titles - ‘Dew Cloud’, ‘Cluttered Room’, ‘Moth Food’ - are abstract yet evocative, and the same is true of the music. ‘Tyne’ is structured around a plucked string arrangement and sonorous bass note that’s both dramatic and uplifting, and there are some carefully orchestrated moments of tension amidst the soft vistas that spread across the nine tracks of ‘Terrane’. More structured than ‘regular’ ambient, it’s nevertheless calm and deceptively intricate.
