Cry Havoc come on ‘flaunting an invigorating fusion of heavy metal’, drawing influence from ‘the power of Pantera, the swagger of Skid Row and the attitude of Guns ‘n’ Roses in their prime’. But they’re not really as bad as all that, despite what the cover art may suggest (or the fact there have already been two acts with the same name). The four tracks on ‘New Life’ bring some full-on rock action and despite some rather obvious soloing, particularly on ‘Ignition’, they manage to avoid many of the worst clichés of the old-school acts that inspire them without adopting the clichés of the new breed of metallers. The guitars are heavy but defined and there’s more focus on the riff than the fretwanking heroics. Surprisingly unshit.
