Our Rating:
The debut self-titled EP from Charlie Yang is certainly something to shout about. The singer-songwriter and musician has previously been compared to other pop rock artists such as Muse, Keane, Maroon 5, and The Killers... a tad ambitious? No. One thing we can be clear on is that this kid is headed somewhere great. Fast. Having grown up in the ever-cool city of London listening to pop-LEGEND Michael Jackson, Charlies style is a fresh new take on pop-rock that is so current it might as well be wearing a retro 80s jacket and some skinny jeans.

The opening track from the EP, Jaded is definitely the strongest. With fantastic production, great guitar riffs, and a superb vocal its hard to criticise. The wonderful tone and strength in Charlies falsetto is almost reminiscent of the iconic funk-pop artist Prince; and stands out in a crowd of gravelly toned rock singers.

Easier to Love is another great listen. First time round, its perhaps less of a stand-out track compared to Jaded. However, by the third listen its noticeable that there is more sincerity in the lyrics and vocals of this track. In particular, the heartfelt vocals in the final chorus are actually really touching.

Overall, the EP is a great taster from the upcoming artist. For fans of The Script and One Republic, its essential listening. On this occasion, at least, perhaps that's a good thing.
